Sotogrande was established by the generous couple Joseph Rafael McMicking y Ynchausti, an heir to the Philippine multi-national conglomerate Ynchausti y Compañia, and, Mercedes Zobel de Ayala y Roxas, of the prominent Zobel de Ayala family, both are Spanish Filipino.

The Zobels, having seen the idyllic coasts in 1962, bought five neighbouring farms, with the idea of creating a luxurious residential development by the Mediterranean. McMicking succeeded in creating what has become one of the most luxurious urbanizations in Europe, in May 2006 it was featured in The Times as having the most expensive homes in Europe.[6] The jet set appeal of Sotogrande lies in the natural beauty of the site, enhanced by the early landscaping, planting of avenues of palm and conifer trees, underground infrastructure and wide, two-lane roads. There are a number of artificial lakes and 5 golf courses, including the world-famous Valderrama, created by Jaime Ortiz-Patiño[7] and the San Roque course.

Today the Sotogrande Urbanization has four of the nine golf courses in the municipality of San Roque within the development itself: Valderrama (number one in continental Europe), Real Club de Golf Sotogrande (number 7 of the ranking), Almenara Golf and La Reserva de Sotogrande.
In addition to six of the nine polo fields of Santa Maria Polo Club it is also located within the residential area.

Nor should we forget to mention other quality sports facilities such as Puerto Deportivo Sotogrande and Sotogrande Marina for lovers of sailing and water sports, with the Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande among its excellent facilities.

On the other hand, it has two tennis clubs and paddle: Sotogrande Racquet Centre and The Octagon; an equestrian center, Centro Hipico Sotogrande and two beach clubs, The Cornet and The Octagon.

In addition, the hotel plant of Sotogrande includes some of the best accommodations in the municipality of San Roque Hotel Almenara ****, **** and Hotel Sotogrande Hotel Club Maritimo Sotogrande ****. Almenara has within its facilities with a spa and holistic health center: Sotogrande Health Resort.

Finally, on a commercial level and additional services, Sotogrande and the environment in the district of Valle del Guadiaro has several points of shops and other businesses serving the tourists or resident at the following locations: Puerto Sotogrande, Supercor / Sotomarket Mall, Paniagua Mall / Plaza Blanca, Mar y Sol Mall and Pueblo Nuevo-Centro Comercial Sotovila.

In short, Sotogrande has become a model development for residential tourism and a paradise for those seeking a destination with quality and tranquility, far from mass tourism and the flashes of cameras.
